The Mother Who Would Not Leave
In 2007, researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute discovered a deep-sea octopus clinging to a rocky ledge nearly a mile beneath the Pacific surface. They named her Octomom. Over the next four and a half years, marine biologist Bruce Robison and his team returned again and again, and every single time, she was there — draped over her clutch of eggs, gently fanning them with fresh water, guarding them from predators in the cold dark.
She never ate. Not once in fifty-three months. Her skin grew pale and loose. Her eyes clouded. Scientists watched her body slowly consume itself so her young could live. When the eggs finally hatched in 2011, the tiny octopuses drifted upward into the ocean. Their mother, spent entirely, was gone.
Fifty-three months of choosing someone else's life over your own.
Scripture tells us that the Almighty so loved the world that He gave. And giving — real giving — always costs something. Jesus did not offer us His surplus. He offered Himself. Every breath in Gethsemane, every step toward Golgotha was a mother's vigil over what she loved, sustained not by self-preservation but by something fiercer.
That octopus never saw her children swim. Jesus, risen, does see His. He sees you. The sacrifice was not wasted.
Whatever you are clinging to today — a marriage, a calling, a wayward child — take heart. The God who made a creature willing to give everything for life she would never witness is the same God who gave everything for yours.
