The Name on the Nursery Wall
When Hurricane Harvey flooded Houston in August 2017, Jessica Lozano was eight months pregnant and trapped on the second floor of her home in Dickinson, Texas. Floodwaters swallowed the first floor. Her husband had left for work before the roads disappeared and couldn't get back. She had no boat, no rescue in sight, and contractions starting six hours into the ordeal.
Jessica later told reporters she kept repeating one phrase to herself and to the baby: "You are not alone. You are not alone."
A neighbor in a fishing boat reached her that evening. Her son was born two days later in a San Antonio shelter. She named him Emmanuel.
King Ahaz faced a different kind of flood — armies massing at his borders, terror rising in his throat. God offered him any sign he wanted, sky-high or ocean-deep. Ahaz refused, wrapping his fear in false piety. So God chose the sign Himself: a child would be born, and His name would be Immanuel — God With Us. Not a military strategy. Not a political alliance. A baby. A presence.
