When Maria and Carlos Gutierrez adopted their daughter from foster care in Houston in 2019, everyone assumed they'd rename her. That's what families did — you gave the child your family name, maybe honored an abuela or a patron saint. Carlos's mother had already embroidered "Sofia" on a baby blanket.
But Maria and Carlos had prayed for months, and they felt God pressing something specific on their hearts. At the adoption finalization hearing, when the judge asked what name they'd chosen, Carlos said clearly: "Her name is Hope."
The courtroom went quiet. His mother looked confused. Hope wasn't a family name. It wasn't traditional. It didn't honor anyone they knew.
But Carlos explained later: "God didn't give us this child to carry our family's past. He gave her to carry His promise for her future."
