The Name That Broke the Silence
In 1505, Martin Luther's father Hans had mapped out his son's entire future. Martin would study law, rise in society, and bring honor to the Luther name. Hans had sacrificed everything to fund his son's education at the University of Erfurt. But when a terrifying thunderstorm nearly killed the young man on a road near Stotternheim, Martin cried out to Saint Anne and vowed to become a monk. Hans was furious. He refused to speak to his son for years, his silence heavy with disappointment and broken expectations.
Yet God was not finished. When Hans finally traveled to Wittenberg and witnessed his son preaching with a fire that shook all of Europe, something broke open in the old man. He could no longer hold his tongue against what the Almighty was clearly doing.
Zechariah knew that kind of silence. For nine months, he could not speak — struck mute by his own doubt when the angel Gabriel announced the impossible. But when the moment came to name his son, Zechariah grabbed a writing tablet and scratched out words that defied every expectation his neighbors held: "His name is John." Not Zechariah Jr. Not a family name. A name chosen by God alone.
And immediately his tongue was loosed, and his first words were praise.
