The Necessity of Counsel: Why Nations and Souls Fall
"Where no counsel is, the people fall." — Proverbs 11:14
Kings and rulers stand in special need of counsel. When a ruler is surrounded by wise counsellors, both he and his people are safe. We can trace this truth throughout history in the rise and fall of nations. Elohim's advice is one of our most valuable helps, yet we often neglect it. Man is apt to go astray; his judgment becomes misled, his affections corrupted, his will ungoverned.
Why do we need advice? Sin has a strangely deluding influence over those it tempts. The voice of conscience grows faint, requiring wise counsel to reinforce it. We are also placed in special circumstances from which others must rescue us. Our own perception cannot always discern what lies ahead.
Where should we seek advice? Not indiscriminately from all people, for this reveals weakness of mind and irresolute will. Nor should we seek it merely to confirm our predetermined views. Supreme wisdom flows with greatest force through hearts bound closely to our own—those who know us deeply and love us truly.
How should we receive counsel? Resist the danger of resenting unpleasant advice. Remember that experienced counsellors are rarely disposed to offer unsought guidance. Guard against displeasure simply because counsel contradicts your desires. Not all who attempt to lead are good counsellors. Discernment is required both in seeking and receiving the wisdom of others.
