The Nerve Endings of the Soul

In the mid-twentieth century, British surgeon Dr. Paul Brand made a discovery that changed how the world understood leprosy. Working with patients in Vellore, India, he found that leprosy does not consume flesh the way people had believed for centuries. Instead, the disease destroys nerve endings. Patients lost their ability to feel pain, and without that warning system, they burned their hands on cooking fires, walked on broken bones, and wore their fingers down to stumps — never once feeling the damage being done.

Dr. Brand called pain a gift. Not because suffering is pleasant, but because the capacity to feel is what keeps us alive.

Faith works the same way in the human soul. It is our spiritual nervous system — the capacity to sense what we cannot see. Faith registers the presence of God the way nerve endings register heat before the flame touches skin. It warns us when we are walking toward destruction. It tells us when something is broken and needs healing. It aches with holy longing when we have wandered too far from home.

Without faith, we lose that sensitivity. We can walk straight into spiritual danger and feel nothing at all. We mistake numbness for peace. We confuse the absence of conviction with the presence of freedom.

The writer of Hebrews understood this when he described faith as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith does not create the reality — it lets us feel it.
