The Night the Sand Began to Whisper
In 2019, twenty-two-year-old Maria Chen joined a sea turtle conservation team on the beaches of Padre Island, Texas. Her job during the night shift was simple: watch the marked nests and wait. On her third night, she kept hearing a faint scratching sound beneath the sand, so faint she thought it was wind or crabs skittering nearby. Twice she radioed the team leader, veteran biologist Dr. James Hadley, asking if something was wrong with the equipment. Both times he told her everything was fine.
The third time she called, she described the sound more carefully. Hadley's voice changed. "That's not interference," he said. "That's them. The hatchlings. They're ready to emerge. You've been hearing them all along. You just didn't know what you were listening for."
Within the hour, over seventy tiny loggerhead turtles broke through the surface and scrambled toward the Gulf.
Young Samuel heard a voice three times in the darkness of the tabernacle and three times ran to old Eli, certain the priest had called him. It took Eli, weathered and failing but still wise enough to recognize the sacred, to tell the boy what he was actually hearing. "It is the Lord." Sometimes God's voice comes not as thunder but as a quiet stirring we mistake for something ordinary. We need someone further down the road of faith to say, "That thing you keep hearing? Pay attention. Answer it." The call was always there. Samuel just needed help knowing Whose voice it was.
