The Notes That Aren't Counted

In music theory, there is a small, elegant ornament called a grace note. It appears in the score as a tiny notation — almost an afterthought — and it carries no official weight in the measure. When a pianist counts the beats, the grace note is not counted. It exists outside the arithmetic of the bar. And yet, as any student of Chopin knows, the grace notes are what make the music breathtaking. His Nocturne in E-flat Major is technically built on notes that can be measured, but what gives it that aching, luminous beauty are the grace notes that slip between the beats, the flourishes that belong to no category the time signature recognizes.

Grace notes are never earned by the melody. They are given to it.

This is how the grace of the Almighty works in a human life. We try so hard to count the beats — to measure our worth by what we produce, to tally our good days against our bad ones, to earn our place in the song. But the most beautiful thing God does in us is the thing we cannot account for. It is the kindness we did not deserve. The second chance that fit nowhere in our ledger. The mercy that arrived between the beats of our striving.

Paul wrote it plainly: "By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing" (Ephesians 2:8). You cannot count your way to grace. You can only receive the note that was freely given — and let it change the whole song.
