The Notes You Don't Deserve

In music, there is a technique called the grace note. It is a small, ornamental note printed tiny in the score, with no official rhythmic value. It does not belong to the measure. It does not count in the time signature. By every rule of musical accounting, it should not be there.

And yet, when a pianist plays a grace note just before landing on the main melody, something happens. The phrase comes alive. The music breathes. What was technically correct becomes beautiful.

Composers from Bach to Chopin filled their works with grace notes, these unearned, uncounted additions that transform everything they touch. A grace note borrows no time from the measure and demands nothing from the listener. It simply appears, a gift slipped into the margin of what was already written.

This is what the grace of the Almighty looks like in our lives. We keep careful accounts of what we deserve, tallying our moral ledger with anxious precision. And then God adds something we never earned, a note that defies our calculations but makes the whole song make sense. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians, "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."

You cannot earn a grace note. That is why they call it grace. The Most High has written beauty into your story that you never had to deserve.
