The Number You Didn't Want to See

When Apple launched its Screen Time feature in 2018, it did something deceptively simple — it showed iPhone users exactly how many hours they spent staring at their screens each day. No lectures. No restrictions. Just a weekly report with one honest number.

For millions of people, that number was a shock. Four hours. Six hours. Sometimes eight — nearly a full workday lost to scrolling, swiping, and tapping through apps they barely remembered opening. The phone hadn't changed. The apps hadn't changed. But seeing the truth changed everything. Users began deleting apps, setting limits, and reclaiming hours they didn't know they'd surrendered.

This is how the Gospel works on the human heart. Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). He doesn't begin by snatching our idols away. He begins by showing us clearly what has captured our attention, our affection, our time. The Holy Spirit acts like a divine Screen Time report — illuminating the hours we've poured into worry, bitterness, comparison, or control.

Freedom doesn't start with willpower. It starts with sight. When God opens our eyes to what actually holds us, the grip loosens — not because the temptation disappears, but because we finally see it for what it is.
