The Ocean That Christ Redeemed
On the morning of October 31, 2003, thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton lay on her surfboard at Tunnels Beach on Kauai's North Shore, her left arm dangling in the water. A fourteen-foot tiger shark struck without warning, severing her arm just below the shoulder. By the time her best friend's father fashioned a tourniquet from a surf leash, Bethany had lost over sixty percent of her blood.
Most people would never touch saltwater again. But Bethany Hamilton was back on her surfboard twenty-six days later, the stitches barely healed, teaching herself to paddle and pop up with a single arm. By January 2004, she entered the NSSA regional competition on Kauai and placed fifth — against two-armed surfers who had trained all season. Within two years, she won the NSSA National Championship.
What made the difference was not grit alone. Bethany's family had raised her in deep Christian faith, and in interview after interview she pointed beyond herself. "I don't need easy," she said. "I just need possible." She came to see the attack not as the end of her story but as the Christ-shaped turning point that gave her a platform to encourage millions.
Romans 8:28 does not promise that all things are good. A shark attack is not good. But Paul insists that God works all things together for good for those called according to His purpose. Bethany's life preaches that truth in salt and sunlight. When you face a loss that seems to disqualify you, remember: the God who calls you back into the water is already redeeming what tried to pull you under.
