The Open Door at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
In 1963, photographer Stanley Tretick captured one of the most iconic images in White House history. Two-year-old John F. Kennedy Jr. is crawling through the secret panel in the front of the Resolute Desk while his father, the President of the United States, works above him. The most powerful office in the world, and a toddler wanders in like he owns the place.
No Secret Service agent stopped him. No appointment was necessary. No chief of staff screened his request. John-John didn't approach the Oval Office with a prepared speech or a formal petition. He came because his father was there, and that was enough.
Every other person in Washington needed clearance, credentials, and connections to get through that door. Senators waited for scheduled meetings. Ambassadors presented formal letters of introduction. But a child in pajamas had more access than all of them combined — not because of what he had done, but because of whose he was.
The writer of Hebrews extends this same staggering invitation to every believer. The throne room of the Almighty — more powerful than any earthly office — stands open. Not because we have earned the right to enter, but because Christ has made us children of the King. We come not with polished prayers or perfect records, but with the confidence of a child who knows the one sitting on the throne calls us His own. So let us approach boldly. The door is open. Our Father is waiting.
