The Passion of the Christ: Christ's Fruit Reproduced in Us - Christocentric (Galatians 5:22-23)
As we gather this morning, I want you to take a moment and picture the scene portrayed in The Passion of the Christ. Imagine the dusty streets of Jerusalem, the air thick with tension and the whispers of a crowd hungry for blood. There in the midst of all this chaos stands our Savior, Jesus. He is battered, bruised, and yet holds an unwavering peace that defies understanding.
Can you hear the jeers and mockery? The soldiers are spitting insults, and yet, in the face of such hostility, Jesus remains silent, embodying hesed—a steadfast love that goes beyond mere duty. He looks out over the crowd with compassion in His eyes, uttering those heart-wrenching words, “Father, forgive them.” In that moment of profound kindness, He offers more than just a promise; He embodies the very essence of love that we are called to imitate.
Then, as He hangs on the cross, He turns to the thief beside Him, offering grace when all hope seems lost. “Today, you will be with me in paradise,” He says, radiating the joy of salvation even in His suffering. This is not just a story; this is the character of Christ being lived out in the most trying of circumstances.
Galatians 5:22-23 paints a portrait of this character: love, joy, peace—these aren’t merely attributes we strive for; they are the fruit of the Spirit cultivated within us. As we remain in union with Him, the Spirit shapes us, transforming our very nature. We don’t force ourselves to produce these fruits; we simply abide in Him, allowing His essence to flow through us. Like vines tightly intertwined with the true vine, we become vessels of His love, joy, and peace in a world desperately in need. So, let us lean into this relationship, allowing the Spirit to reproduce the character of Christ within us, one fruit at a time.
