The Passion of the Christ: Christ's Pattern of Overcoming - Christocentric (Romans 12:9-21)
Imagine a small, sunlit room filled with friends gathered around a table, laughter bubbling over as they share stories over a hearty meal. Among them is a woman named Ruth, whose laughter is infectious. But her joy is shadowed by a deep wound; her brother was wrongfully imprisoned by someone who bore malevolence in their heart. Even as the warmth envelops her, she feels the bitterness clawing at her soul.
One evening, Ruth is alone in her thoughts, wrestling with the desire for vengeance. The image of her brother, unjustly locked away, torments her. Yet, in her anguish, she remembers the story of Christ on the cross—how He, in His darkest hour, uttered words of forgiveness: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” She closes her eyes, imagining the weight of all that injustice, and yet, through Christ’s example, she sees a different path—the path of agape, that selfless love that seeks the good of others even when it seems impossible.
In that moment, Ruth knows she is called to something greater. She begins to pray for her brother’s captor, not because it’s easy, but because she desires to follow Jesus’ pattern. She sees that to overcome the darkness that threatened to consume her, she must engage in that same hesed, that steadfast love, which is far more potent than retaliation.
As she steps into the light of forgiveness, she discovers a profound truth: it is in loving the unlovable that we find our true strength. Ruth not only participates in Christ's way; she becomes a living testament of that overcoming love. And just as she blossoms into a bearer of hope, we too are invited to embody this Christocentric love, to bless those who curse us, and to overcome evil with good, transforming our pain into purpose. In following His example, we find that we, like Ruth, can rise and overcome, not just for ourselves but for a world aching for redemption.
