The Patch from Fifteen Billion Miles Away
In late 2023, NASA's Voyager 1 — the farthest human-made object from Earth, hurtling through interstellar space more than fifteen billion miles away — went silent. A single corrupted memory chip began sending garbled, nonsensical data back to mission control. The spacecraft was broken, alone, and impossibly far from anyone who could help.
But the engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory did not give up. They spent months diagnosing the problem, then wrote a software patch and transmitted it across that unimaginable distance. The signal, traveling at the speed of light, took over twenty-two hours just to reach the spacecraft — and another twenty-two hours for the response to return. They pressed send and waited nearly two full days to learn whether their remedy had worked.
It did. Voyager began speaking clearly again.
There are seasons when we feel like Voyager — damaged in some deep, internal place, drifting in darkness, sending out signals that even we cannot understand. We wonder if anyone is listening, if anyone could possibly reach us where we are. But the God who spoke galaxies into existence is never intimidated by distance. The Psalmist reminds us, "He sent out His word and healed them" (Psalm 107:20). No corruption is too deep, no distance too vast, for the healing word of the Almighty.
He has already pressed send. The signal is on its way.
