The Peril of Listening to Every Word Spoken
Take no heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee (Ecclesiastes 7:21). The Preacher warns against an obsession with others' opinions that fragments the soul.
Public opinion is an invisible yet formidable force shaping both individual character and national destiny. Though imperceptible to sight and touch, it directs the course of men and nations alike. We must distinguish between two errors. First, the recklessness of those who disregard others entirely—asking "Am I my brother's keeper?"—and thereby become stumbling blocks to weaker brethren through thoughtless conduct. Second, the anxiety of those enslaved to worldly fashion, whose entire day darkens because a severe word reaches their ears. Idle gossip floats everywhere; sharp words spoken in passion are often regretted afterward.
The reconciliation lies in discerning which voices demand our attention. We inhabit one family, closely united, hurting or helping one another at every point. Yet it is folly to grant the world's shifting opinion authority over our character.
The decisive question concerns God's opinion alone. The Father Himself loveth you because ye have loved Me, declares Yahweh through Christ. Those who believe the Son receive the Father's approval; those who reject Him find God's wrath abiding upon them. Seek not the fickle verdict of men, but the eternal judgment of Elohim—therein lies true wisdom.
