The Permanence of Christ's Word Against All Transience

Christ declared, "My words shall not pass away" (Matthew 24:35), anchoring His authority in the eternal character of His teaching. Canon Liddon identified three marks of our Lord's words: the divine authority that speaks through them, their elevation above earthly discourse, and their awful depth that pierces the soul.

The permanency of Christ's teaching rests on four pillars. First, His words possess special inspiration—a living power that cannot perish. Second, the gospel carries "the power of an endless life," equipped for its enduring task of bringing truth's light to every heart. The St. Lawrence River carved Niagara Falls over twenty-seven thousand years; similarly, the Church's labor continues until gospel proclamation reaches all nations.

Third, having survived eighteen centuries of revolutions, Christ's words will outlast all future upheaval. Isaiah testified: "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand for ever" (Isaiah 40:8).

Fourth, the impression Jesus' words make upon redeemed souls proves their permanence. When heaven and earth pass away—when material forms dissolve—only the eternal law, the divine type, the unchanging order remains. Each gospel truth believers learn, feel, and practice abides forever in transformed hearts. While creation's forms fade, Christ's words endure as the unshakeable foundation of redemption.
