The Physician Who Swallowed the Disease
In 1984, Australian physician Dr. Barry Marshall faced a medical establishment that refused to believe him. He and his colleague Dr. Robin Warren had discovered that stomach ulcers were caused not by stress or spicy food, as doctors had taught for decades, but by a spiral-shaped bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. Journal after journal rejected their findings. Conference audiences laughed.
So Marshall did something astonishing. He brewed a petri dish of the bacteria and drank it.
Within days, he developed severe gastritis. He had given himself the very disease he was trying to cure — and then he treated it with antibiotics, proving his theory was right. His willingness to take the illness into his own body eventually saved millions of lives and earned him the Nobel Prize in 2005.
When I read that story, I cannot help but think of a far greater Physician. Jesus did not simply study our disease from a distance. He entered our broken humanity. He took our sickness, our sin, our death into His own body on the cross. Isaiah wrote it centuries before it happened: "By His wounds we are healed."
Courage is not the absence of risk. It is the willingness to absorb the cost so that others might live. Marshall swallowed bacteria. Christ swallowed death itself — and turned it into a cure for the whole world.
Whatever suffering you are being called to walk through today, take heart. The Great Physician has already gone ahead of you, and He did not flinch.
