The Power of Humility - Contemporary Example
There’s a small community garden not far from our church, cultivated by a group of neighbors who come from different walks of life. Each week, they gather, tools in hand, to tend to the land. One particular morning, as the sun began to rise, I watched as a retired schoolteacher named Mrs. Thompson brought with her a tender seedling. It was a delicate thing, barely standing on its own, but she spoke to it with such gentleness that I felt a wave of warmth wash over the garden.
“Just like us,” she said, “this little one needs the right soil, sunlight, and water. It won’t thrive on its own. It needs care and humility to grow.” As she planted it, her hands moved slowly, reflecting a deep obedience to the rhythm of nature, a lesson in how we are to align ourselves with God’s plan.
Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us this profound truth: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Just as that fragile seedling leans into the care of Mrs. Thompson, we, too, must lean into God’s guidance.
Through her humility and obedience, she teaches us that spiritual growth often requires reflection and a willingness to trust, even when the path ahead seems unclear. In those moments, we find purpose—not just in our own lives, but in cultivating the lives of others around us.
