The Prince of Egypt: Encountering the Holy God - Traditional (Exodus 3)
Imagine with me for a moment, a dusty desert landscape under a scorching sun, where heat waves ripple above the ground, distorting the horizon. In the midst of this parched expanse, a lone figure named Moses tends to his father-in-law Jethro's flock. Days blend into one another, each filled with the monotonous bleating of sheep and the harsh whispers of the desert wind. But one fateful day, something extraordinary shatters the ordinary.
As Moses wanders deeper into the wilderness, he comes upon a sight that sends a shiver down his spine—a bush ablaze, yet miraculously untouched by the flames. The fire dances, vivid and fierce, but the bush remains unscathed, a vibrant green amid the chaos. With every crackle and pop, the air thickens with an indescribable weight. Suddenly, a voice calls out, penetrating the silence of the desert: “Moses! Moses!” It reverberates through the stillness, echoing not just in the air, but deep within his very spirit.
“Take off your sandals,” the voice commands, “for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” In that moment, the atmosphere shifts. Moses, awestruck and trembling, falls to his knees, his heart racing with a mix of fear and wonder. Here, in the solitude of the wilderness, God reveals Himself—both the I AM WHO I AM, a being of infinite majesty, and the compassionate God who sees the suffering of His people.
This burning bush, a symbol of God’s transcendent holiness and His intimate presence, teaches us a profound truth: that the Holy One invites us to draw close, but only with reverence and awe. As Moses hides his face, we too are reminded of our need to approach God with humility, recognizing that His transformative presence can ignite our lives without consuming us. In our own encounters with the divine, may we learn to stand on holy ground, shedding our sandals and our distractions, as we step into the sacred space of His love and grace.
