The Prince of Egypt: Uncreated Light and Divine Mystery - Orthodox (Exodus 3)
Imagine, if you will, a vast wilderness under a scorching midday sun. Dust dances in the air, shimmering like the heat waves that rise from the parched ground. In the distance, we see a lone figure, Moses, shepherding a flock of sheep. The quiet of the desert is piercing, broken only by the occasional bleat of a sheep or the rustle of dry grass. But suddenly, the ordinary becomes extraordinary—Moses notices something unusual, a bush aflame, yet not consumed.
As he draws nearer, the heat of the flames does not singe the leaves, and the blaze does not reduce the bush to ash. Instead, it glows with an otherworldly brilliance, a manifestation of God's uncreated light. It's as if the fire itself is alive, speaking to Moses in a voice that resonates through the very marrow of his bones: “Moses, Moses!” There, in that sacred moment, God reveals His very essence, not through the brilliance of a solar flare, but in a gentle, inviting manner that beckons Moses to step closer, to engage.
This scene foreshadows the Transfiguration, where Jesus radiates a divine luminescence on the mountain, revealing the same uncreated light that enveloped the bush. Like the bush that burned but was not consumed, Mary, the Theotokos, held within her the fullness of divinity without losing her humanity.
God’s voice invites us into this grand narrative of mystery and revelation. We may not fully grasp His essence, but like Moses, we can approach His presence, filled with wonder, and participate in His divine energies. The burning bush teaches us that while God remains beyond our complete understanding, He longs for us to draw near, to be transformed by His light without fear of being consumed. In the midst of our own deserts, God invites us to discover Him anew, to experience the fire that purifies rather than destroys, and to understand that even in our encounters with the divine, we are forever changed.
