The Protection You Were Born With
In 1901, Emil von Behring received the first Nobel Prize in Medicine for demonstrating that protective antibodies could be transferred from one body to another — what immunologists now call passive immunity.
But long before Behring published his research, every mother's body was already practicing this principle. During the final weeks of pregnancy, a mother's antibodies cross the placental barrier and flood her baby's bloodstream. The infant arrives in a world teeming with bacteria and viruses already carrying a shield they never requested, never earned, and cannot yet even comprehend.
This is the medicine of grace.
Paul writes that "while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly" (Romans 5:6). We did not ask for salvation. We could not earn it. We were not even aware of how desperately we needed it. Yet before we drew our first spiritual breath, God had already transferred His righteousness into our account.
The newborn doesn't understand immunoglobulin G. She doesn't know the science behind what protects her. She simply lives — shielded by a love that moved before she could move herself.
Some of you are still trying to manufacture your own spiritual antibodies. You're exhausting yourselves earning what has already been given. Grace is not a reward for the strong. It is protection freely given to the vulnerable, by the One who loved you before you knew you needed loving.
