The Purpose You Can't See Yet

For over a century, the human appendix was the poster child for purposelessness. Medical textbooks called it vestigial — a leftover with no real function. Surgeons removed it without a second thought. If your body were a church, the appendix was the member everyone assumed was just taking up space.

Then in 2007, a research team at Duke University led by immunologist William Parker made a surprising discovery. The appendix serves as a safe house for beneficial gut bacteria. When illness wipes out the microbes in your intestines, the appendix quietly repopulates them — like a backup generator that kicks on when the power fails. The organ nobody wanted turned out to be the one keeping the whole system running.

Some of you are living in an appendix season. You feel sidelined, overlooked, unsure why God has you where you are. The work you do seems invisible. The role you fill feels small. You are tempted to believe you serve no real purpose.

But the God who designed a hidden organ with a life-saving function is the same God who placed you exactly where you are. The Almighty does not create without intention. As the psalmist declared, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14).

Your purpose is not determined by your visibility. Sometimes the most essential work happens where no one is looking.
