The Purpose You Would Never Have Chosen
In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, there is a quiet moment in the Mines of Moria that speaks volumes about calling. Frodo, exhausted and afraid, turns to Gandalf and says, "I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf's reply is one of the most profound lines in cinema: "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
Frodo did not choose his burden. He did not raise his hand and volunteer for a journey that would nearly destroy him. The Ring came to him — small, unassuming, and terrifyingly heavy with consequence. And yet the entire fate of Middle-earth rested on whether this ordinary hobbit would accept what had been placed in his hands.
Scripture tells us that God prepared works for us before we were even born (Ephesians 2:10). Not all of them feel like gifts when they arrive. Some look like burdens, interruptions, or detours we never wanted. But the Almighty does not make mistakes in His assignments.
You may not have chosen the season you are walking through. But the Lord chose you for it. Your purpose is not something you manufacture — it is something you faithfully carry. And like Frodo, you will find that the journey reveals a strength you never knew you had.
