The Race He Could Not Finish Alone

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final with everything he had trained for within reach. Midway through the backstretch, his hamstring snapped. He collapsed onto the track, clutching his leg, his Olympic dream shattered in an instant.

What happened next became one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Redmond pulled himself up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. Then a large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." Derek buried his face in his father's chest, and step by agonizing step, they crossed the finish line as 65,000 people rose to their feet.

Derek did not win a medal that day. But he demonstrated something more profound than athletic triumph — the willingness to lean into arms stronger than his own when his strength was gone.

The Psalmist understood this kind of trust. "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You," David wrote in Psalm 56:3. Trust is not the absence of pain or the guarantee of the outcome we wanted. Trust is collapsing into the arms of a Father who runs onto the track when we cannot take another step on our own.
