The Race He Couldn't Finish

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, endured multiple surgeries, and finally made it to the Olympic stage. When the gun fired, he was running strong — until his hamstring snapped halfway through the race.

Redmond crumpled to the track, clutching his leg. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but he waved them off. He pulled himself up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. Then a large man pushed past security and burst onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and said, "We're going to finish this together."

With 65,000 people on their feet, father and son crossed the finish line arm in arm. Derek buried his face in his father's chest. He didn't win a medal that day. He didn't even post an official time. But the world saw something more beautiful than gold.

That is the gospel. We are all Derek Redmond — broken mid-stride, unable to finish on our own. And grace is not a coach shouting instructions from the sideline. Grace is the Father who breaks through every barrier, wraps His arm around us, and says, "We're going to finish this together."
