The Race He Never Finished Alone
On August 3, 1992, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal at the Barcelona Olympics. He had trained for years, overcome five surgeries, and finally made it to the biggest stage in athletics. Coming off the curve, about 150 meters from the finish line, his right hamstring snapped. He collapsed on the track in agony.
What happened next remains one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Redmond pulled himself up and began hopping toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. Then a large man pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and said, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Sixty-five thousand people in the Estadi Olimpic rose to their feet.
Derek did not win a medal that day. By every measurable standard, he lost. But no one who watched that moment saw failure. They saw a father who refused to let his son suffer alone.
That is the gospel. We are all Derek Redmond — broken mid-stride, unable to finish on our own strength. And God, our Heavenly Father, does not watch from the stands. He enters the track. He puts His arm around us. Through Christ, the Father says to every one of us, "We're going to finish this together."
You do not have to crawl to the finish line alone. Your Father is already running toward you.
