The Race He Never Won

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, endured twenty-two surgeries, and poured everything into this moment. When the gun fired, he exploded off the blocks.

Then, halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped.

Redmond crumpled to the ground. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher. But he refused it. He stood up, tears streaming, and began hopping toward the finish line. Sixty-five thousand spectators fell silent.

Then a large man pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's waist and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." The two of them limped down the final stretch while the stadium rose to its feet in a standing ovation that drowned out the public address system.

Derek Redmond never won a medal that day. But he finished.

Faith works like that. There will be moments when everything you have trained for, prayed for, and believed for seems to tear apart beneath you. You will want to quit. But the Father does not send a stretcher. He steps onto the track. He wraps His arm around you and says, "We will finish this together."

Hebrews 12:1 tells us to run with endurance the race set before us. It never promises we will run it without limping. It promises we will never limp alone.
