The Race He Refused to Quit
On August 3, 1992, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final at the Barcelona Olympics. He was running the race of his life when, halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. He crumpled to the ground while the other runners surged past him toward the finish line.
What happened next stopped 65,000 people in their seats. Redmond pulled himself up. Weeping, he began hopping toward the finish on one leg. Officials moved toward him, but he waved them off. Then a large man pushed through security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's waist and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did, step by agonizing step, while the entire stadium rose to its feet.
Courage is not the absence of pain. It is the decision to keep moving toward the finish line even when everything in you says to stop. And here is the gospel in that moment — you do not hobble alone. The Almighty does not watch from the stands. He comes onto the track. He puts His arm around you. "Fear not, for I am with you," He says through Isaiah. "I will strengthen you, I will help you."
Whatever race has broken you this week, your Father is already on His way down to meet you.
