The Race That Mattered Most

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and finally made it to the Olympic stage. When the gun fired, he burst from the blocks with everything he had.

Then, halfway around the bend, his hamstring snapped. Redmond crumpled to the track, clutching his leg, his Olympic dream shattered in an instant. But what happened next became one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Redmond pulled himself up. Weeping, limping, he began hobbling toward the finish line. Officials rushed toward him, but he waved them off. Then a large man pushed past security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's waist and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Sixty-five thousand people in Montjuic Olympic Stadium rose to their feet.

Derek Redmond did not win a medal that day. He did not even record a time. But he finished.

The writer of Hebrews tells us to "run with perseverance the race marked out for us" — and the very next phrase reminds us we never run alone. We run with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him.

Your race may not look the way you planned. You may be limping. But the Father is beside you, and together, you will finish.
