The Race That Nobody Won — And Everybody Remembers

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and finally made it to the Games. When the gun fired, he exploded off the blocks. Then, halfway around the bend, his hamstring snapped.

Redmond crumpled to the track. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher. But Derek Redmond did something no one expected — he stood up. Grimacing, hobbling, he began making his way toward the finish line. Sixty-five thousand people in Montjuic Stadium rose to their feet.

Then a man pushed past security and wrapped his arm around Derek's waist. It was Jim Redmond, his father. "We started this together," Jim told his son, "and we're going to finish it together." Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while the entire stadium wept.

The writer of Hebrews knew something about that kind of race. "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" — not the race marked out for someone else, not a shorter or easier race, but the one God set before you. And here is the gospel in that moment: when your strength gives out, your Father does not send a stretcher. He comes down to the track Himself. He wraps His arm around you. And He whispers what every struggling soul needs to hear: "We finish this together."
