The Raw File
Every professional photographer knows the difference between a JPEG and a RAW file. When you shoot in JPEG, the camera makes all the decisions — it compresses the image, discards data it deems unnecessary, and hands you a finished but limited picture. But when you shoot in RAW, the sensor captures everything: every particle of light, every shade of color, every detail hiding in the shadows.
Open a RAW file in Adobe Lightroom and it looks flat, even disappointing. The colors are muted. The contrast is weak. It does not look like much at all.
But the photographer knows something. All the beauty is already there — it just has not been revealed yet. With patient, skilled adjustments, she pulls warmth from the highlights, recovers detail from the deepest shadows, and brings forward colors the untrained eye never noticed. The image is transformed not by adding something foreign, but by revealing what was always captured in the light.
This is what God does with a human soul. When the Holy Spirit begins His transforming work, He is not making you into someone you were never meant to be. He is developing what He placed in you from the moment He knit you together. Every gift, every capacity for love, every impulse toward goodness — it was all captured in the original exposure. "We are His workmanship," Paul writes, "created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand" (Ephesians 2:10).
You may feel like an unprocessed file today — flat, muted, far from what you could be. But the Master Photographer sees every bit of beauty hiding in your shadows, and He is not finished developing you yet.
