The Red Heifer: Daily Cleansing for Holy Fellowship
The red heifer without spot, prescribed in Numbers 19, reveals a profound spiritual principle: even the true believer in Christ suffers daily defilement and requires continual cleansing.
Our defilement arises from three sources. First, we come into actual contact with sin, imaged in the corruption of death itself. The best of men remain men, and while clothed in flesh, we still sin. Sin has dyed us through and through, staining the warp and woof of our nature. Until we lay aside these bodies and are admitted to the Church of the firstborn above, we shall never cease intimate connection with sin.
Second, we gain defilement through companionship with sinners. This dusty world must leave its mark upon our garments, let us travel as carefully as we may. The bride of Christ must confess: "I am black because the sun hath looked upon me." We live among the spiritually dead; contact renders us unclean.
Third, we need daily cleansing to fit us for daily fellowship with a holy Elohim. The ceremonial provision of the red heifer—burned entirely, its ashes mixed with water—became the means of restoration. This ancient rite teaches that our access to Yahweh's presence depends not upon our own efforts, but upon the continuous application of Christ's atoning work. Daily defilement demands daily recourse to the fountain opened for sin and uncleanness.
