The Renewal of God's Law: From Stone to Heart
When Moses shattered the first tablets at the sight of Israel's idolatry, Adonai commanded him: "Hew thee two tables of stone." This renewal reveals profound truths about the moral law's perpetual binding authority.
Initially, when God inscribed the law upon man's heart at creation, the preparation and writing belonged exclusively to Elohim. The fleshy tables of conscience bore the oracles of God without human labor. But transgression changed everything. Once those oracles were defaced through sin, man's preparation fell largely upon himself—through penitence and faith, though never without Divine help.
Yet God's renewal accomplishes what human effort cannot: it strips man of all ground for boasting while ascribing all glory to Adonai. The tables themselves were plain stone; their embellishments came solely from the Divine hand.
This second inscription teaches essential conditions for spiritual restoration. First, speedily—"early in the morning." Second, personally—this transaction occurs between God and the individual directly. Third, patiently—Moses waited forty days and forty nights again. What is being done is being done for eternity; do not despond if the work progresses slowly. If God is writing upon your heart, let that alone be your comfort.
