The Rest Found Alone in Christ's Redemption
Isaiah 28:12 declares: "This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest." These words direct us to Jesus Christ as the source of genuine spiritual repose.
The Nature of Rest in Christ differs fundamentally from earthly comfort. This rest denotes spiritual enjoyment—that unspeakable delight wherein a believing soul reposes in Christ Jesus as its portion and happiness, its all and in all. No created good compares with it; bodily relief from labor or temporal troubles cannot approach its refreshing power. This alone deserves the name of true rest, for everything else merely wears the appearance of rest, while this is real and substantial.
Spiritual rest springs from two sources: First, a spiritual discovery of the infinite excellence of Christ's person. When the enlightened believer grasps the glories of Christ, all created glory vanishes as stars before the sun. Second, a view of Christ's all-atoning sacrifice—recognizing its infinite merit, the divine authority appointing it, and God's public declaration of its acceptance.
This rest brings fourfold effects: pardon of sin; acceptance with God and enjoyment of His special favor; deliverance from sin's reigning power; and the delightful prospect of eternal happiness in Heaven.
The weary—all who labor beneath spiritual burdens, worn by a sense of aggravated guilt—are offered this rest. Yet sinners will never relish it until united to the Saviour through faith. The children of God, heavy laden with spiritual burdens, discover in Christ alone the genuine rest that sustains and transforms.
