The Reward of Well-doing Surely Comes
Henry Melvill, that masterful preacher of the nineteenth century, once expounded upon the principle that faithful obedience carries its own compensation. He observed that many servants labor in obscurity, their virtues unnoticed by earthly masters, yet their work is recorded in the ledgers of Almighty Adonai — the Lord God.
Consider the faithful steward who tends his master's vineyard with unwavering diligence, though receiving no accolade or increase of wages. The vines flourish under his careful hand. The fruit multiplies. His integrity strengthens both the enterprise and his own soul. Though men may forget his name, Elohim — God — observes every honest exertion.
This truth transforms our labor. When we serve with hearts fixed upon pleasing Jehovah rather than winning human applause, we discover a reward far exceeding temporal recognition. The man who disciplines himself to righteousness, who maintains his convictions when tempted to compromise, who serves faithfully in small matters—he accumulates a treasury of character that neither moth nor rust can corrupt.
Melvill's insight cuts deeply: all well-doing receives its recompense, whether in this age or the age to come. The widow's mite, the servant's lowly faithfulness, the intercessor's hidden prayers—none are lost. Adonai — our righteous Judge — sees in secret and rewards openly. This certainty should embolden every believer toward persistent obedience.
