The Righteous Lord Loves Righteousness

The righteous Lord loveth righteousness. This declaration from Psalm 10:7 captures a foundational truth: dikaiosyne (righteousness) is not merely a divine attribute among many, but the quality binding all of Elohim's perfections into perfect unity. Righteousness describes God's essential nature—the being and rendering of what is right, equity, and justice in eternal rectitude.

This truth bears directly on matters of faith and practice. First, it illuminates the redemption accomplished through Christ's atoning death. The theological problem solved at Calvary was this: How can the love of God be manifested while righteousness maintains its majesty? The cross answers perfectly—divine justice and divine love converge at one point.

Second, this statement casts light upon the mysterious providences that perplex us. When God's dealings seem inexplicable, when suffering confounds our understanding, the conviction that "the Lord is righteous and loveth righteousness" anchors the troubled spirit to patience and submission. We entrust ourselves entirely to His hands.

Third, this doctrine governs all human business between man and man. His countenance beholds the upright with special favour and approval, seeing in them—however imperfectly—the lineaments of His own Divine image reflected. Where righteousness reigns in human conduct, there the righteous Lord's approbation rests.
