The Ring You Didn't Choose

In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, there is a quiet moment deep in the Mines of Moria where Frodo Baggins turns to Gandalf and confesses what many of us have felt in our darkest hours. "I wish the Ring had never come to me," he says. "I wish none of this had happened."

Gandalf's reply has echoed through pulpits and living rooms ever since: "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Frodo never volunteered for his mission. He was a hobbit who loved second breakfasts and the quiet green of the Shire. Yet the purpose that found him was not a punishment — it was an invitation into something far larger than his own comfort. And when he finally accepted it, not with enthusiasm but with trembling obedience, an entire world was saved.

Many of us sit in these pews carrying burdens we never asked for — a diagnosis, a calling that terrifies us, a responsibility that feels too heavy. We look at our lives and whisper Frodo's words: "I wish this had never come to me."

But the Almighty does not waste assignments. The very thing you wish you could set down may be the exact purpose for which you were created. You do not have to feel ready. You only have to decide what to do with the time given you.
