The Road That Chose Him

In Victor Hugo's masterpiece Les Misérables, there is a pivotal moment when Jean Valjean — a hardened ex-convict consumed by bitterness — is shown unexpected mercy by Bishop Myriel. After Valjean steals the bishop's silver and is dragged back by the police, the bishop does something astonishing. He hands Valjean the silver candlesticks too, telling the officers he gave them as a gift. Then he leans close and whispers, "I have bought your soul for God."

That single act of grace does not just save Valjean from prison. It rewrites his entire purpose. The man who lived only to survive becomes a man who lives to lift others up. He becomes a factory owner who treats workers with dignity, a mayor who serves the poor, and a father who sacrifices everything for a girl who is not even his own daughter. His life transforms from mere existence into something that echoes across generations.

Here is what strikes me about that story. Valjean did not discover his purpose by looking inward. He discovered it when someone reflected the face of God to him. Purpose was not something he manufactured — it was something grace unveiled.

The Almighty does the same with each of us. We may feel like our past defines us, but God looks at us and says, "I have already purchased something greater for your life." When we receive that grace, purpose is not something we have to chase. It is something we finally become free enough to walk in.
