The Sealing of the Spirit: Progressive Assurance in Christ
The sealing of the Holy Spirit, described in 2 Corinthians 1:22, is the work by which Elohim deepens grace in the believer's heart, producing increasing conviction of acceptance in Jesus and adoption into God's family.
This sealing operates in two primary modes. First, it may occur suddenly—a vivid impression of Divine grace received in conversion that never fades. Yet in most cases, the Spirit's sealing is gradual, proceeding through distinct stages.
The first impression comes at regeneration, often faint and scarcely perceptible. Do not undervalue what Adonai has accomplished, however modest it appears. A deeper seal follows when the believer realizes his huiothesia (adoption as a child), when legal fears dissolve and slavish anxiety ceases. The furnace of affliction also imprints the seal fresh and deep upon the soul. Job testified: "He maketh my heart soft." Thus an afflicting season becomes a sealing season.
Crucially, the Spirit's sealing does not necessarily accompany great spiritual joy or a rejoicing frame. Assurance may come quietly.
Two imperatives follow: First, every believer must diligently and prayerfully seek the sealing of the Spirit. Do not rest satisfied with the faint impression of conversion alone. Second, this blessing flows only through Adonai's appointed channel—prayer, through which His covenant mercies enter the soul. Christ Himself was the first sealed (John 6:27); believers follow in that same pattern of confirmation.
