The Seed That Refused to Stay Buried

In 2005, Dr. Sarah Sallon of Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem did something no one believed possible. She took a date palm seed recovered from the ruins of Masada — a seed that had been sitting in dry, silent darkness for nearly two thousand years — and planted it. Weeks later, a green shoot broke through the soil. They named it Methuselah.

Two millennia of dormancy. Twenty centuries locked inside a husk no bigger than a fingertip. And yet, when that ancient seed finally met water and warmth, something deep within it remembered what it was made to do. It grew.

There is something in that story that sounds like the gospel. So many of us walk through life carrying a freedom we have not yet opened. The Apostle Paul wrote that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Not "there will be someday" — there is. The life of God is already planted in us, waiting for the right conditions to push through the hard shell of our fear, our shame, our old habits.

You may feel like that seed at Masada — buried, forgotten, trapped in the dark for longer than you can remember. But the God who coaxes life from two-thousand-year-old seeds is the same God who stands over the dry ground of your heart, ready to call something green and living out of it.

No season of dormancy is too long for the Almighty.
