The Seed That Waited Thirty-Two Thousand Years

In 2012, a team of Russian scientists led by Svetlana Yashina accomplished something that stunned the botanical world. Deep in the Siberian permafrost, buried in an ancient squirrel's burrow some 125 feet below the surface, they discovered fruit tissue of Silene stenophylla — a small flowering plant — that had been frozen for approximately 32,000 years. These remnants had survived the entire last Ice Age.

Using placental tissue from the frozen fruit, the team coaxed the ancient plant back to life in their laboratory. It didn't merely sprout. It grew. It flowered, producing delicate white petals. It even generated viable seeds of its own, as if thirty-two millennia of ice and darkness had been nothing more than a long winter's nap.

Consider that. For 32,000 years, life persisted in that seed. Glaciers advanced and retreated. Entire civilizations rose and fell. And all the while, a quiet spark of vitality waited beneath the frozen ground, ready to bloom the moment conditions were right.
