The Seeds That Waited a Century

In 1879, botanist William Beal buried twenty bottles of seeds in a secret spot on the campus of Michigan State University. His experiment was simple but audacious: he wanted to know how long seeds could survive in the earth and still grow.

Every few decades, a researcher carefully digs up one bottle, presses the seeds into moist soil, and waits. In 2021, one hundred and forty-two years after Beal first pushed those bottles into cold Michigan ground, scientists unearthed the sixteenth bottle. They planted the ancient seeds, stepped back, and watched. Within days, green shoots broke through. After more than a century buried in darkness, the seeds still held life inside them.

The researchers were not surprised. They had learned what those seeds already knew: dormancy is not death. Waiting in darkness is not the same as being forgotten.

Scripture says it plainly: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9). The Almighty has planted things in your life — prayers whispered years ago, quiet acts of faithfulness, seeds of obedience sown in seasons no one noticed — that have not yet broken the surface. And in the silence, you may wonder whether anything is happening at all.

But those seeds did not rot. They held their purpose through winter after winter after winter. And when the moment came, they grew.

Whatever God has buried in your life is still alive. The harvest is not cancelled. It is patient.
