The Seven Minutes You Cannot Control
When NASA landed the Curiosity rover on Mars in August 2012, engineers faced what they called "seven minutes of terror." Because radio signals take fourteen minutes to travel from Mars to Earth, the team had no way to intervene during descent. By the time they received word that Curiosity had entered the Martian atmosphere, the rover had already been on the surface — intact or in pieces — for seven full minutes. Every parachute deployment, every thruster firing, every split-second calculation had to unfold without a single human hand on the controls.
The engineers did something that looked like courage but felt like surrender. They pressed the button, then sat in silence while an outcome they could not change played out 154 million miles away.
Faith asks something remarkably similar of us. Joshua stood at the Jordan River with an entire nation behind him and heard the Lord say, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9). God was not promising Joshua control over what came next. He was promising presence through it.
Courage is rarely the absence of that sick feeling in your stomach. It is pressing forward when the signal delay between your obedience and God's visible answer stretches longer than your comfort can bear. The engineers at NASA had done faithful work, and they trusted it. How much more can we trust the faithful hand of the Almighty?
Step into your seven minutes. He is already on the other side.
