The Seven Minutes You Cannot Steer

On February 18, 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover began its descent to the surface of Mars. Engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena faced a problem no amount of genius could solve in the moment: an eleven-minute communication delay between Earth and Mars. Every command they sent would arrive long after it mattered. So the rover had to execute its entire landing sequence alone — deploying its parachute, jettisoning its heat shield, firing its retro-rockets, lowering itself on a sky crane — all without a single word of real-time guidance from home. NASA called it the "seven minutes of terror."

But here is what made that landing possible: years of preparation poured into the rover before it ever left Earth. Every instruction it needed was already written into its systems. The engineers could not steer the craft through those seven minutes, but they had done the deeper work of equipping it for exactly that silence.

Faith works the same way. There are seasons when heaven feels eleven minutes away — when our prayers seem to vanish into a void, when we cry out and hear nothing back. But the silence does not mean we are abandoned. The Father has already written His faithfulness into the fabric of our lives through His Word, through His Spirit, through every answered prayer that came before.

Perseverance landed safely that day. It was built for the silence. And so, friend, are you. The God who equipped you is the same God who waits on the other side of the quiet.
