The Seventeen-Year Wait Beneath the Soil

For seventeen years, they live in total darkness. Periodical cicadas — specifically Brood X, one of the largest emergences ever documented — spend nearly two decades buried underground as nymphs, clinging to tree roots, feeding on sap, waiting. Entomologists have studied this phenomenon for centuries, and what they have discovered is remarkable: the cicadas are not dormant. They are developing. Their bodies are slowly transforming, preparing for the moment when the soil temperature reaches exactly sixty-four degrees Fahrenheit.

And then, one spring evening, billions of them tunnel upward, shed their shells, unfurl iridescent wings they have never used, and fly.

The apostle Paul wrote that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17). Sometimes freedom does not arrive on our schedule. Sometimes the work God is doing in us happens in the dark, in the waiting, in the seasons when nothing seems to be changing at all. But transformation is happening beneath the surface.

Those cicadas do not break free because they forced their way out early. They emerge because the fullness of time arrived. Their freedom was built in the patience of preparation.

If you are in a dark season today — buried under grief, addiction, doubt, or despair — take heart. The God who engineers emergence after seventeen years of hidden growth is the same God at work in you. Your wings are forming. And when El Shaddai says it is time, nothing will keep you underground.
