The Signal Beyond the Edge

In 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1 on a journey into the complete unknown. For thirty-five years, the spacecraft traveled outward, past Jupiter, past Saturn, toward the edge of our sun's influence. In August 2012, it crossed the heliopause — the boundary where the solar wind stops and interstellar space begins. No human object had ever been there. The instruments registered a sudden change: cosmic ray density surged, particle winds shifted, and for the first time, something built by human hands existed in the space between stars.

Here is what strikes me: Voyager is still transmitting. From over fifteen billion miles away, using a transmitter with the power of a refrigerator light bulb — just twenty-three watts — it sends data home. The signal takes more than twenty-two hours to reach Earth. But it keeps sending.

Courage in the life of faith often looks like this. Not a dramatic explosion of bravery, but a steady willingness to move beyond what is familiar, past the boundary where comfortable certainties end. Paul wrote, "We walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Sometimes God calls us past our own heliopause — beyond the edge of what we can map or predict. Courage is not waiting until the unknown becomes known. Courage is transmitting faithfully from wherever He sends you.
