The Signal That Kept Calling
In 2018, a massive dust storm on Mars blanketed the planet so thoroughly that NASA's Opportunity rover lost all sunlight to its solar panels. After fifteen years of faithful service on a mission originally designed to last just ninety days, Opportunity went silent.
But NASA didn't give up. For eight months, engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory transmitted over 835 recovery commands across the void of space, each one essentially whispering across 34 million miles: "Are you still there? Can you hear us? Wake up."
They knew the odds were slim. They knew the dust might never clear. But they kept sending the signal anyway, because that is what you do when something matters to you — you keep calling.
The Almighty has been doing this since the Garden. Humanity goes dark. We lose power. Sin covers us like a dust storm that blocks out every trace of light. And God keeps transmitting. Through prophets, through Scripture, through the still small voice in the middle of our longest nights, the signal never stops: "I am here. I have not forgotten you. Wake up."
Romans 5:8 tells us that while we were still in darkness, Christ died for us. He didn't wait for us to brush off the dust and power back up. He came while the storm was still raging.
NASA eventually had to stop calling Opportunity. But here is the difference — God never stops. His signal of hope has no expiration date, no final transmission. He is still calling your name this morning.
