The Signal That Won't Stop

In 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1 into space carrying a golden record of sounds from Earth — a baby's cry, ocean waves, Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. Scientists expected the mission to last five years. Nearly fifty years later, Voyager 1 is still transmitting. From over fifteen billion miles away, in the frozen silence of interstellar space, a signal no stronger than a refrigerator light bulb crosses the void and reaches home.

In 2023, engineers lost contact with the probe for months. The onboard computer had begun storing data in corrupted memory. Most assumed it was finished. But a team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena refused to give up. They sent a command sequence that took 22 hours to arrive, then waited another 22 hours for a reply. When the signal finally came back, clean and clear, engineers wept.

Hope works like that. It is not loud. It is not dramatic. It is a faint, persistent signal that crosses impossible distances. The Apostle Paul knew this when he wrote, "Hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently" (Romans 8:24-25).

You may feel like you are transmitting into silence. But the God who holds the stars in place has not lost your signal. He is listening. And His reply is already on its way.
