The Signal Was Always There
For decades, the Global Positioning System circling overhead carried two signals — one razor-sharp for the military, and one deliberately scrambled for everyone else. The Pentagon called this degradation "Selective Availability." Civilian GPS receivers could get you within roughly a hundred meters of your destination, but the signal they received was intentionally corrupted, accuracy withheld on purpose.
On May 1, 2000, President Clinton ordered Selective Availability turned off, and overnight, every GPS receiver on earth became ten times more precise. The satellites hadn't changed. The signal hadn't changed. What changed was that the interference between the signal and the receiver was finally removed.
That is what Paul means when he writes, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17). The signal of God's love has always been broadcasting with perfect clarity. But sin functions like Selective Availability — it scrambles our reception, introduces just enough distortion that we wander, overshoot, circle the same blocks again and again.
Christ did not create a new signal. He removed the interference. The cross disables the scrambler between the Holy God and the human heart. And suddenly what was always meant for you — His presence, His direction, His peace — locks in with a clarity you did not know was possible.
The signal was always there, friends. Freedom means the static is finally gone.
